Summer is winding down, and you know what that means—it’s back-to-school season. After three glorious months of vacations, fun in the sun, and lots of chiropractic visits, it’s time to dive back into a wonderful world of boundless creativity, lots of learning, and, of course, new friendships on the playground. Still, as exciting as this time can be, we also understand the transition isn’t always easy.
Shifting from a laid-back summer to a structured environment that includes earlier mornings, academic demands, social pressures, and homework can be tough on any kid. It’s even more overwhelming for children with ADHD, Sensory Processing Disorder, or anxiety.
But not to worry. Our team at Compassion Family Chiropractic in Lewisville, TX, wants you to know you’re not alone, and there is hope.
Follow these four back-to-school transition hacks, and your child will be set up for success this school year.
Getting Your Kids Reacclimatized To School Schedules Is Easier Than You Think
If you’re lying awake at night, worried about your child’s ability to cope with the back-to-school transition and overcome issues such as staying focused in class, regulating their emotions and behavior, difficulty following instructions, and maybe a little impulsivity and mood swings, please know you’re not alone. An estimated 7 million U.S. children between the ages of 3 and 17 have been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, commonly referred to as ADHD. The CDC says boys are more likely to have ADHD than girls, and about 6 in 10 children have what is considered moderate or severe ADHD.
While all children have their moments, those with ADHD exhibit magnified versions of these behaviors. The result is a constant uphill climb in the classroom, home, and public settings. Your child doesn’t want to act like this, by the way. They simply don’t know how to control their actions. This can also lead to difficulties with socializing with other kids, emotional regulation, and self-esteem.
In other words, they may struggle to make or keep friends in school. They may also lash out at teachers, even over something as simple as where they are supposed to sit in class each day.
This is why we are passionate about offering neurologically based chiropractic care. What is neurologically based chiropractic care, you ask? Well, it’s a gentle, non-invasive approach to chiropractic care that addresses the underlying neurological factors contributing to several physical, mental, and emotional stressors we experience every day.
With the gentle adjustments we provide in our office during their developmental years, we have helped many kids overcome various chronic issues, including ADHD!
But What About Those 4 Tips?
While you’re allowing us to treat your child from a chiropractic perspective, it’s important to be mindful of these helpful strategies—especially as they get back into the swing of being in school again.
Gradually reset their sleep schedule — Quality sleep is crucial for adults and kids alike. You may have been a little lax with their bedtime routine during the summer, but now is the time to get them back into an established routine. It’ll probably take a few nights, and some bribes or meltdowns to get there. We recommend by gradually adjusting bedtime 15 minutes at a time, get them off of any electronics an hour before bedtime, and remain calm as you help them ease back into the routine.
Get rid of the clutter — There are more benefits to ensuring your kids’ rooms are clean besides hygiene and chore money. A clean room exudes calmness, control, structure, and predictability. But don’t just stop there. Clean up and organize the entire house to reduce stress and teach valuable organization skills. You can even designate specific areas for school items, studying time, etc. All of these factors combined will ease anxiety and help your child stay in control of their surroundings.
Set up a distraction-free study space — To piggyback on the previous tip, most kids, including those with sensory issues and ADHD, respond well to quiet areas in the house that are completely theirs and distraction-free. As a result, you may start to notice they’re having an easier time getting homework done and studying for big tests.
Keep them active — Staying active is one of the easiest ways to boost endorphins, improve cognitive function, manage anxiety, and keep children feeling positive deeper into the day. This can be as simple as going on a 30-minute walk before school, doing jumping jacks between classes, and doing lots of stretching.
Follow these tips, including getting your child set up with consistent neurologically-focused chiropractic care, and you’ll see a monumental difference in your child’s overall demeanor and their ability to transition back to school with ease.
