Why You Should Never Sit With a Wallet in Your Back Pocket

Where do most guys put their wallets? That’s right — in their back pocket. Whether they wear jeans, dress pants, or shorts with pockets … that’s the natural spot for any wallet. We watched our dads and grandpas do the same thing, and we remain creatures of habit in that regard. But did you know sitting with a wallet in your back pocket all these years can hurt your spine?

It’s true, guys. Oh, it’s definitely true.

The Chiropractic Downer of Sitting on Your Wallet

As ‘natural” as it may be to slip your wallet into your back pocket, the reality is that doing so ultimately creates an uneven surface as you sit. Over time, your pelvis and spine will adapt to this unnatural seated position to stabilize and maintain balance. Also, you may develop a habit of shifting more of your weight to one side as you sit, even when you don’t have a wallet in your back pocket — simply because you are used to it. Consequently, everything will become out of whack.

If this imbalance is allowed to continue, you may begin to notice quite a few negative consequences:

  1. Postural problems

  2. A pinched sciatic nerve

  3. An increase in lower back pain

  4. Related pain in your shoulders and neck

Maybe sitting on your wallet or cell phone isn’t causing noticeable discomfort yet, but why risk it? If you already have underlying postural and spinal alignment issues — and let’s be honest, most of us do simply from enjoying daily life — consistently sitting in these ways for any length of time will likely worsen those dysfunctions and cause pain.

What Should You Do With Your Wallet?

It’s natural to carry your wallet in your back pocket. But men and women are learning that their billfold is equally as accessible in a front pocket or coat pocket instead. You could also trade your fat wallet for a slimmer version or even switch to a money clip. Both options are easier to slide into a front pocket or at least create a more level sitting surface if you insist on keeping them in your back pocket.

At Compassion Family Chiropractic, we rely on gentle and specific adjustments that correct the root issues of your pain and dysfunction throughout your entire spine. Making these gentle, specific, and consistent corrections to your spine results in progress every visit, adding up to better health outcomes in the long term. By staying on top of your spinal health, you can head off any small imbalances at the pass before they become more significant issues down the road.

We have had the blessing of seeing so many health transformations in our office — beyond the typical adjustment to resolve back and knee pain — and we hope you will be the next success story!
