6 Practical Tips To Avoid Neck Pain As Much As Possible

What if I told you I have the secret to avoid neck pain altogether? You’d probably think I’m nuts, and you’re not far off. In reality, neck pain is a real pain in the … neck. And full disclosure: there’s no way to avoid it completely. After all, injuries, freak accidents, postural misalignments you’re unaware of, or accidentally falling asleep in an awkward position can all cause neck pain.

I once tweaked my neck simply by turning my head too quickly with excitement when I saw my dog, Max, for the first time in a week!

A friend of mine had neck pain for a week after a random muscle spasm while sitting at his desk at home.

We’ve all been there. That said, there are practical ways for you, me, and everyone to avoid neck pain as much as possible in daily life. All it takes is a little mindfulness and you reading and sharing this blog post.

Improve Your Chances Of Avoiding Neck Pain With These Tips

  1. Try a new pillow — If you constantly wake up with neck pain and shoulder pain, your pillow may not be supporting your neck while you sleep. Choose a pillow that keeps your spine in a neutral position. This way, the natural curve of your neck is supported and maintained throughout the night versus being forced to bend too much to the left, right, downward, or upward. I’m not an expert on pillows, but the Sleep Foundation recently came out with its list of the best pillows for neck pain.

  2. Sleep on your back—Sleeping on your back increases your chances of avoiding neck pain. Basically, you’re allowing your entire spine to rest comfortably rather than bending or turning your neck unnaturally while lying on your left or right side. This can be a bit of a challenge for people who prefer to sleep on their side or stomach, but it’s worth a shot to see if that’s the cause of your pain.

  3. Keep your screens at eye level — Whether you’re texting your mom to let her know you’re on your way over for dinner, working for eight hours in front of the computer, or watching TikTok videos during your downtime, it’s important to avoid constantly looking down. Text neck and neck pain from screens that aren’t at eye level is a real problem for people of any age.

  4. Use hands-free devices when possible — Constantly tilting your neck to the right or left to hold a cell phone up to your ear is an easy way to experience neck pain. Headphones, earpieces, etc., can help you avoid this.

  5. Stay hydrated — We bet you didn’t expect to see this tip in a blog post about how to avoid neck pain. The reality is that being properly hydrated keeps your discs and vertebrae pliable and strong.

  6. Visit with your chiropractor — Anyone who has received chiropractic care in Lewisville, TX, for neck pain has learned over time that true healing and improved function happen when you maintain a consistent correction schedule. By adjusting your cervical vertebrae through gentle and specific adjustments, we can realign the spine, treat muscle tension and poor mobility, and alleviate pressure on the nerves in your neck. Next thing you know, the small changes you experience can become more significant and last longer.

Everyone visits the chiropractor for different reasons. Perhaps yours is because of neck pain. For someone else, it might be chronic headaches, lower back pain, old injuries that never healed, or shoulder issues that have steadily worsened over 5-10 years.

Chiropractors are more than just “back crackers.” We improve how your entire body functions!
